Feeling Exhausted? Where to Recharge in NYC When Perfectionism Makes Self-Care Feel Impossible
As an anxious perfectionist, taking a break to recharge often feels like you're falling behind—like you just don’t have the time to “waste”—especially in NYC. And even if you do find the time, busy spaces packed with people aren’t exactly the best places to unwind—especially if you need some space to breathe. You might love walking through Washington Square Park, but when it’s full of tourists and locals, it can just add to the overwhelm.
But here’s the good news—even if it seems tough, finding moments of calm in New York is totally possible. It just takes a little planning and knowing where to go. As a therapist who works with perfectionists, I help my clients find a balance between New York's nonstop energy and those much-needed moments of peace to recharge.
Why Perfectionism Makes Recharging Difficult (And Why It’s Important Anyway)
For anxious perfectionists, two common struggles are making time to relax and actually enjoying it when they do. If your to-do list feels endless—and everything on it needs to be done perfectly—it’s easy to feel like taking a break just isn’t an option. You might think, “I’ll relax when everything’s done,” but let’s be real—the list never really ends, does it? There’s always more to do.
Instead of proper breaks, you might end up taking quick, mindless moments like scrolling through your phone. These can be fine in moderation, but they often don’t actually help you recharge. And even when you do try to take a break, it’s easy to feel guilty or distracted by how much you still need to do. But remember, taking breaks is productive. Recharge time helps you come back to everything else with more focus and energy.
I’ve gone into more detail on anxiety, perfectionism, and burnout in other blogs, so feel free to check out my blog page for more tips on how to manage them. Here are a few to get started: The Anxious Perfectionist Paradox, Understanding the Anxious Perfectionist, Perfectionism Myths.
Where Perfectionists Can Recharge in NYC
It can be hard to carve out time for self-care, and even harder to figure out where to go to actually relax. Here are some places in NYC that can help you hit pause and catch your breath. I’ve got a few suggestions to help you get started in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens, but these are just starting points, and you can apply them anywhere. And remember, there’s no one “right” place—just pick what feels best!
Nature/Outdoor Spaces
Getting outside, even in the city, can help you slow down. Nature has a way of helping you connect with the world around you—and even people-watching can be a nice addition to help you feel less overwhelmed. Plus, it’s a great break from the constant hustle.
Parks – Try Riverside Park, Stuyvesant Square Park, Prospect Park, or Gantry State Park. Look for quieter areas or visit during slower times of the day when you can. And keep an eye out for those little hidden parks around the city—those can be great spots to breathe for a bit.
Gardens – The Bronx or Brooklyn Botanic Gardens are great spots to unwind. But if you’re looking for something smaller or closer to you, check out local community gardens for a more intimate and calming experience.
Day trips/hikes – If you want to get out of the city for the day, take a day trip to Long Island or the Hudson Valley for a hike or nature walk. Beautiful scenery and open spaces can offer a nice break from the pressures of the city.
Quiet Coffee Shops
Some coffee shops can be busy and noisy, but if you search just a little, you can find a calm spot where people are working quietly throughout the day. These are perfect places to feel like you’re part of the city without needing to interact much. Plus, sipping on a warm drink (or even an ice-cold one) can help you relax. Just watch your caffeine intake—it can mess with your anxiety if you overdo it!
Some (usually) quiet spots to try: Stumptown Coffee, Sweetleaf Coffee, or any local shop you’ve been meaning to check out.
Bookstores and Libraries
Books are a perfect escape from your everyday routine, and local bookstores or libraries can offer a quiet space to recharge. Reading can take your mind off the stress of the day and let you get lost in another world.
Local bookstores – The Strand, Greenlight Bookstore, and Astoria Bookshop are great places to start.
Libraries – Your local NYPL branch, Brooklyn Public Library, or Queens Public Library can offer some peace and quiet.
Creative Spaces
Art—whether you're appreciating it or creating it—can be a great way to recharge. Museums offer a peaceful place to reflect while taking an art class (or making art from the comfort of your own home) can help you embrace the imperfect, messy process of creating something. It’s a great way to challenge perfectionism, too. Plus, having a class on your schedule has the extra benefit of keeping you accountable for going—instead of pushing it off “just for this week”… for the 17th week in a row.
Museums – MoMA is always a great choice, especially during off-peak hours. Or, try smaller spots like The Rubin Museum of Art or The Noguchi Museum for a quieter experience.
Art Classes – Want to try something hands-on? Sign up for a ceramics or painting class at the 92nd Street Y, or check out the Brooklyn Museum’s art classes.
Wellness Spaces
If you’re into yoga or meditation, wellness spaces can be a perfect way to slow down and reconnect, whether before your day starts or at the end of a long day or workweek. These activities help you relax physically and mentally, which can be a huge relief for anxious perfectionists. And here’s another chance to have a class on your schedule to help keep yourself accountable.
Yoga – Studios like ISHTA Yoga or New Love City can help you get focused on relaxation and grounding. If you’re already into yoga at your gym, that could be just as helpful if it’s in a peaceful environment. Or, try ClassPass to test out a few studios until you find one that fits.
Meditation – Meditation centers are great for a deeper sense of relaxation, but you can always start at home with a meditation app.
Integrating Recharge into Your NYC Life
You might be thinking, “There’s no way I can fit any of this into my schedule! I have way too much to do!” And I hear you! When you have a lot on your plate or you’re used to being constantly “productive,” finding time for recharge can feel impossible. If you want some ideas on how to make it work, I’ve got a whole blog on self-care for perfectionists here.
To get you started, here are a few simple ways to make it happen:
Plan it out – Be intentional about adding recharge time to your schedule. Find a park on your commute or on your way to meet up with a friend, or take 15 minutes during your lunch break (pro tip: actually take your lunch break). Even if it’s just a quick trip to one of these spaces, add a spot for recharging to your week. If you don’t plan it, it’s easy to skip.
Block out the noise – NYC can be a sensory overload. If it helps, wear headphones when you’re out and about. Whether you're in a park or a coffee shop, it can help you stay focused on relaxing.
Practice mindfulness – Take a moment throughout the day, or while you’re doing any of these recharge activities, to check in with yourself. Focus on your senses and the present moment. If you’re taking a break, make it count!
Recharge for the Long Run
Even in NYC, it’s possible to find moments to recharge—yes, even for anxious perfectionists! Prioritizing rest isn’t just about taking breaks now and then; it’s about giving yourself the space to refresh and come back with more energy. Taking the time to recharge means you’ll show up better for everything else in your life—work, relationships, and your own well-being. Recharge isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.
